  • DuPont announces Cyrel surcharges and price increases

DuPont Packaging Graphics, Wilmington, DE, USA, has announced that it will implement surcharges and price increases of up to 10 percent globally, effective Sept. 15. Specific terms will be addressed regionally. Flexographic printing plates, inks, substrates and other raw materials continue to be subject to significant cost increases due to the rising price of oil based feedstocks, energy, freight costs, as well as the recent tight supply of thermoplastic elastomers – a key raw material in the manufacture of flexographic printing plates.

“DuPont Packaging Graphics continues to aggressively pursue manufacturing productivity improvements and cost reductions to offset these increases, and we will work with our customers during these unprecedented times as these cost increases move through the value chain,” says Lisa DiGate, global business director – DuPont Packaging Graphics. “However, we must pass along some of these sustained cost increases while we continue to develop new products that position our customers for success.”

Despite the rising costs, DuPont says it continues to invest in innovation to ensure that customers maintain their competitive advantage in a challenging global marketplace as demonstrated by the technologies unveiled at Drupa earlier this year. “We believe continued focus on innovation ultimately helps our customers to maintain their added value through increased quality and productivity in an environment where costs for substrates, inks and other key raw materials are on the rise,” DiGate says.

  • UPM Raflatac achieves certification from 3 forest groups

UPM Raflatac Inc., Fletcher, NC, USA, announces the company's achievement of chain of custody certification from the world’s three prominent forest certification organizations – the Sustainable Forestry Initiative, the Program for the Endorsement of Forest Certification and the Forest Stewardship Council. The certifications cover UPM Raflatac’s North American labelstock manufacturing facilities located in Fletcher and in Dixon, IL, USA, and the company's slitting and distribution terminal located in Ontario, CA, USA.

Using an independent, third-party auditor, UPM Raflatac has demonstrated that its raw materials are sourced from responsibly managed forests and manufactured by mills that adhere to its standards. The chain of custody certifications demonstrate that UPM Raflatac has established an effective tracking system to identify the amount of certified, uncertified and recycled content in the forest products purchased and used in the company's production processes, as well as in the finished labelstock that is offered to its customers.

“Acquiring chain of custody certification from all three internationally recognized forest certification programs demonstrates our commitment to environmental leadership,” says Linnea Keen, marketing director, UPM Raflatac. “Our certifications are an important part of UPM Raflatac’s sustainability program. We have implemented a comprehensive environmental strategy which addresses all aspects of labelstock manufacturing to optimize production processes, reduce waste and create innovative products and services.”

  • Hutchison Miller offers new topcoated Cothene

LSH Materials, a division of Hutchison Miller Sales, New Britain, PA, USA, has introduced a new topcoated version of its Cothene mono-layered polyolefin film that offers an alternative to vinyl and other films in the health and beauty market, among others. According to the company, the new water based topcoat provides superior ink adhesion and greater rub resistance, allowing converters to deliver more vibrant and durable graphics.

Cothene is composed of a proprietary blend of resins that are specially formulated for a variety of pressure sensitive applications, especially those requiring high quality graphics. Available in frosty clear or white, it is designed for no-label look applications and recyclable with polyolefin substrates.

"Our new topcoated Cothene offers an economical alternative to other topcoated substrates in a wide variety of applications," says Rob Hutchison, president of Hutchison Miller Sales. "Its superior performance characteristics make it easier for printers and converters to deliver the high quality graphics and durability required by their customers."

The film, which can now be thermal-transfer printed, is available in thicknesses from 2 to 6 mils and in widths up to 61". It can be supplied corona treated on one or both sides to a minimum dyne level of 40. The proprietary aqueous topcoat is formulated to print using flexo, offset and gravure print processes.

  • Mondi and 3M enter into a licensing agreement

3M, through its Commercial Graphics Division, has entered into a licensing agreement granting limited rights to 3M patented technology to Mondi, a manufacturer of release liners. The licensed technology enables Mondi to structure the surface of its release liners in specific patterns related to the manufacture of large format graphic films to enable these graphics to be applied more easily, quickly and with fewer defects.

“We are pleased to have negotiated this agreement and establish an official license for Mondi and its customers to use this technology," says Tom Black, marketing operations manager, 3M Commercial Graphics. "The application benefits of this technology have changed the large format graphics industry, resulting in rapidly increasing demand. 3M is offering limited rights to this technology to Mondi and manufacturers of pressure sensitive graphic films. We believe licensing this technology will accelerate growth in the industry."

“Together with its innovative extrusion coating methods,” says Willi Munninger, technical director, Mondi Coating & Release, “Mondi now offers a variety of structured release liners based on this technology that enables large format graphics manufacturers to provide high quality pressure sensitive adhesive laminates.”

  • Nilpeter to manufacture new FB-Line in India

Nilpeter, a narrow web press manufacturer based in Slagelsle, Denmark, has announced that it will begin manufacturing flexo presses in India as part of a joint venture with partner Proteck Machinery. The featured press of this partnership is a 13” servo press with a similar specification to the FB-Line, including rotary screen and cold foil stamping.

Proteck is a manufacturing and distribution company headquartered in Chennai, offering sales and service for Nilpeter in India.

“Nilpeter has a high focus on India – and the entire Asian region. We strongly believe being close to the local markets is the right way to support our industry. We need to nurture our customer base here,” says Peter Eriksen, head of the Indian venture and executive assistant for Nilpeter.

Eriksen says the initial strategy is to offer the new press line to Indian label converters, but down the line when capacity allows it, he could see sales throughout the Region.

“This Indian manufacturing operation will build on the lessons learned from Nilpeter’s Brazilian manufacturing joint venture. In many ways we will duplicate that operation,” Eriksen says.

Jakob Landberg, Nilpeter’s sales and marketing director, comments: “We have strengthened our position heavily in North and South America since we included Nilpeter USA in Cincinnati in the Nilpeter family. Likewise in Brazil with our daughter company in Sao Paulo, manufacturing the FBR-Line since 2007. We feel that local manufacturing in some cases is the right step to ensure a strong footprint. Our philosophy is to be local, globally.”

    According to Nilpeter,...
